Project Collaboration: A Foundation of Collaboration… The breadth, depth and nature of the critical elements of Partnerships for Success are the basis of Richland County’s success story. Richland County is no stranger to the concept of community partnerships and the struggle involved in creating and implementing a viable strategic plan. Throughout the last several decades, we have experienced a number of endeavors to create and actuate community plans. In most cases, these plans have fulfilled state or federal requirements and have regrettably served well to collect dust. Searching for our future… It was not until the early 1990’s that our efforts began to take hold with meaning and purpose. A future planning exercise, called "Future Search" involving a broad cross section of the community resulted in a design, which held participants accountable to each other and the community. The concept was simple: groups were formed and led by people committed to making progress reports on their portion of the plan. Coordination of the reporting was assigned to the Mansfield-Richland Area Chamber of Commerce. Though not 100% failsafe, various aspects of the plan were successfully completed and are thriving today. These milestones were recognized years later, by political leaders, as part of our application for federal Enterprise Zone designation. By the end of the 1990’s our community had leveraged this success to initiate a Community Vision Project. Gaining momentum… Simultaneously the United Way of Richland County was developing a Needs Assessment process based upon the principals of a nationally recognized method and customized by several local visionaries. At the same time, the Richland County Youth and Family Council – with a foundation established in "risk taking" and "out-of-the-box thinking" – was gaining recognition throughout the community as progressive and results oriented. Collaboration is key… As these efforts evolved, the leaders of Vision, United Way and Council became aligned in their thinking. They became united in their commitment to map, access and build upon the vast array of assets in Richland County in a manner that was broad based and community- and neighborhood-centered; to focus decision making on data and community values; and finally, to support best practices with a clear focus on prevention and the delivery of real outcomes. A shared vision and purpose… Richland County’s Partnerships for Success is best described as a committed, cohesive continuity of purpose shared by the Richland Vision Project, the United Way of Richland County and the Richland County Youth and Family Council. All for one and one for all… The three partners – Richland Vision, United Way, and Youth & Family Council – all have distinct roles and responsibilities in Partnerships for Success.
